Get Away — and Get Active — With a Sports-Centered Vacation in Myrtle Beach

A lot of vacationers like to kick back and relax during their getaways. And of course, as one of the premier beach destinations in the Southeast, the Myrtle Beach area offers plenty of picturesque places to do just that — toes in the sand, by the pool, or wherever you choose to rest and rejuvenate.

But for others, vacation means a chance to get active. For these high-energy adventurers, having extended time off work presents a great opportunity for a sports vacation. And once again, the Myrtle Beach area can deliver — in a big way.

Consider these great — and easily accessible — ways to get active during a sports-focused getaway on the Grand Strand:

Beach Volleyball

With 60-plus miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, the Grand Strand offers a number of places to play beach volleyball — including some sand courts with Atlantic Ocean views. A trio of great open-to-the-public beach volleyball courts maintained by the City of Myrtle Beach can be found on the oceanfront just off the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk between 8th Avenue North and 9th Avenue North. Another can be found at LuLu’s restaurant at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach — and this location offers views of the Intracoastal Waterway, too.

Tennis

As a popular resort town, Myrtle Beach is loaded with tennis courts — so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding a place to hold serve during your Grand Strand vacation. A few top options in the area that are open to the public include Midway Park in Myrtle Beach (with six lighted courts), the Rivers Lynch Tennis Center in Myrtle Beach (with 10 courts, eight of them lighted), and McLean Park in North Myrtle Beach (with two lighted courts).

Pickleball

A sport that seems to be sweeping the nation, pickleball has definitely found a home in the Myrtle Beach area. Some of the top open-to-the-public places to play in the area include the above-mentioned Midway Park in Myrtle Beach (with 10 lighted outdoor hard courts), the Pepper Geddings Recreation Center in Myrtle Beach (with four indoor and four outdoor courts), and the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center in North Myrtle Beach (with six indoor and four outdoor courts).

Biking

For those looking to explore the area (and get some exercise) on two wheels, the Grand Strand offers a wealth of on-road and off-road biking opportunities. A few of the Myrtle Beach area’s best biking trails and paths can be found on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach (paved bike lanes), at the Hulk – Horry County Bike & Run Park in Myrtle Beach (with 7 miles of singletrack trails), on the A-10 in Myrtle Beach’s Market Common (a 1-mile singletrack loop), and on the Grissom Parkway Trail in Myrtle Beach (5.2-mile paved trail).

Surfing

The Myrtle Beach area is also home to a sizable collection of surf shops, and a couple of the area’s most popular surf spots can be found near the Cherry Grove Pier in North Myrtle Beach and around 29th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach. Be sure you know the area’s rules pertaining to surfing before you head out. And if you’re looking to learn the sport, Kokopelli Surf Camp offers lessons in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach.

And lots more

Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list. Whatever your sport of choice, you’re likely to be able to find a place to play it in the Myrtle Beach area — so come find your fun on the Grand Strand!
