With so many amazing things to do on your vacation to Myrtle Beach, sometimes it’s tough to fit everything in. And since the Grand Strand is more well known for attractions like the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk or Broadway at the Beach, you might be surprised to learn that the Myrtle Beach area is home to some fantastic museums and historical exhibits to bring some knowledge and culture to your beach vacation. Make sure to take some time and visit some of these great museums and historical exhibits on your upcoming trip to Myrtle Beach.

North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum

Completed in 2013, the North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum showcases a large collection of photographs, historical accounts and works of art that tell the story of the north end of the Grand Strand. Visitors to the museum will take a virtual stroll down memory lane stretching back to the inception of the Grand Strand as we know it in the early 20th century. Exhibits telling the stories of people, businesses and institutions of North Myrtle Beach will show how this special beach town evolved into what it is today. Current special installations in the museum celebrate the ocean artwork of Paul Quick and detail the life of Gene “Swink” Laughter, the creator of the Society of Stranders and a key member in the rise of the shag culture along the Grand Strand.

Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum

Peruse world class works of art with a diverse rotating schedule of special exhibits at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1997 and is actually housed in a villa formerly owned by textile mogul Eugene Cannon and actually relocated over eight miles to its current location along the south end of Myrtle Beach. Inside the historic building, a breathtaking gallery of paintings, illustrations, photographs and sculptures are on display to for visitors to gaze upon and ponder over. One of the country’s finest collections of antique historic maps and prints iis housed and showcased at the museum. Some of the current limited exhibitions include a feature of the surf art of artist Drew Brophy and The Water’s Fine exhibit, composed of large-scale paintings and black and white photography celebrating the special connection humans have with the water and the sense of serenity that it imparts in us.

Pearl Harbor Exhibit at Ripley’s Aquarium

In addition to the remarkable wildlife exhibits within Ripley’s Aquarium, a seasonal rotation of educational and historical retrospectives are always on display. This summer, Ripley’s is commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor with an in-depth exhibit that details the tragic events that unfolded on December 7, 1941. Guests will learn about the events that led up to the attack with historical documents, photographs and interactive displays that both inform and commemorate those lost on that fateful day. The exhibit also features a life-size figure of Franklin D. Roosevelt, a showcase of native Hawaiian aquatic species and a crawl-through replica of the USS Arizona’s BB-39 forward magazine.

As you can see, with these great museums and historical exhibits to enjoy along the Grand Strand, your Myrtle Beach vacation can be as informative and educational as it is fun! And with July in full swing and August still coming up, there’s still time to book a trip to Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach or the other great vacation areas around the Grand Strand.
