Myrtle Beach Has Evolved Into a Destination for Sensory-Friendly Families

Myrtle Beach is the place to be if you have children who have Sensory Processing Disorders.

This city has earned accolades for activities in popular spots for certain needs. Many attractions have schedules or business processes to accommodate families with sensory needs.

Pick up a CAN Card at the Myrtle Beach Welcome Center. It’s unique to this city and is short for Champion Autism Network. Families can use the card for many helpful perks, such as:

  • Curbside hotel check-ins
  • Jumping to the front of the line
  • Getting private seating
  • Receiving expedited service at a restaurant

There is a focus on others on the autism spectrum in many places. Here is what businesses have to offer families with sensory issues.

Savannah's Playground

This playground features ADA-approved equipment and structures. Their purpose is to provide children with a safe environment for all abilities. Elements in the park honor Myrtle Beach resident Savannah Thompson. It features the Crabtree Gymnasium, Harmony Musical Park, and more.

ADVICE: Bring babies and toddlers. The park is inclusive of all youth and all ages, so your teens will love it, too.

Angelo’s Steaks & Pasta

The passion to provide an excellent dining experience is paramount at Angelo’s. It’s one of the Grand Strand’s most famous restaurants! This place lives up to the claim of the “Greatest Steaks in the Universe.” Call ahead, and the team will keep an eye and ear out for you to attend to your every need.

ADVICE: Provide comforting distractions. Small toys, coloring books, and crayons are perfect. Ask for breadsticks or crackers early on.

Sensory Friendly Jump at Big Air - Myrtle Beach

This park is a joy for all children. They’ll have all sorts of opportunities to play, from climbing to zip-lining. Enjoy a CAN-certified hour of jump time and get a discount with your CAN card! Follow Big Air on Facebook for dates.

ADVICE: Bring things that help your child feel relaxed. Recommendations include noise-canceling headphones and favorite stuffed animals.

Star Academy’s Open Play

This site demonstrates the importance of open play. Star Academy has a gym for jumping, climbing, swinging, and sliding! There’s a foam pit, a climbing wall, and sensory panels. Children can play with blocks and puzzles, and read books. The “chill out” areas have comfortable seating and LED lights.

ADVICE: Children might feel overwhelmed even in a site designed for them. Don’t hesitate to leave if you notice your child getting to this stage. Doing so before it’s too late will give your kid, and you, more confidence next time.
