Grand Strand Halloween: All you need to know

Princes, princesses, witches, and dragons.

You could see them all — and more — in Myrtle Beach this Halloween. A beach trip for this day of ghosts and goblins could be what your family needs. Plus, fall is a great time to hit the coast.

Here’s all you need to know for your trip!

Trick or Treat Guide for the Family

Self-awareness is important. Here are other things to keep in mind.

  1. Be comfy

Bypass costumes that drag on the ground, to keep you from tripping. Also, anything that makes you too cold or too hot. Be sure you can take it off without too much trouble for a bathroom break.

PRO TIP: Be Waldo: challenging to find in books, but outstanding in a crowd! A striped red shirt and hat, black-rimmed glasses, and you’re set.

  1. Set rules

Especially if you’re in an unfamiliar place, you’ll need some guidelines. Teens and preteens should stay together or have a system if they get separated. Watch out for little ones in masks who can’t see all they usually can.

PRO TIP: Wear comfy shoes, from adults to little ones. Good shoes will help prevent you parents from having to tote the toddlers after 5 minutes.

  1. Stay bright

Take a flashlight with you. Slap reflective tape on any dark costumes. Stick to sidewalks and walking paths and look both ways when crossing the street!

PRO TIP: If you’re making a costume, choose bright colors for the base. Then you won’t need to add reflective or glowing additions.

Beach Costume Ideas

1. Surfer

Hang 10 on Oct. 31! You likely have all you need for the trip. Some board shorts or a wetsuit for the base. A kickboard or surfboard of cardboard. Add a Hawaiian-style shirt for effect.

PRO TIP: If you are blessed with long locks, go with them. If not, grab a wig for a radical look.

2. Finding Nemo

This popular little clownfish from the movie makes for a great group costume, and it’s easy to do yourself. All you need is foam, paint, and some gumption.

PRO TIP: Consider this easy costume If you have a baby along for the ride. Transform your family into the cutest school on the Grand Strand.

3. Palm Tree and Beach Ball

It’s fall, but Myrtle Beach is still about fun in the sun. These cute, easy-to-do costumes will leave no doubt what season is on your mind. A chip can, felt, and tan dress gets you started as a tree. A balloon, papier mache, and a red dress put you on your way to becoming a beach ball.

PRO TIP: Have more than two to dress for Halloween? Check out this DIY idea for a tropical drink and a pool boy.

Oct. 29: How To Decorate a Halloween Theme Cake

Have hands-on fun. Executive Chef Aura will show you how to make a 6-inch cake in a Halloween theme. They’ll provide all materials, but you should dress in something buttercream-friendly. BYOB (or wine.)

PRO TIP: Consider Pink Pineapple Cakes for other sweet needs. They also offer classes for different types of cakes throughout the year.

Oct. 29: Backyard Halloween party

For the grown folk: Matt Parker and the Deacons will play at Backyard Sports Bar & Grill. This trio has a unique sound, a diverse combo of bluesy alternative, funk, and melodious rock with a touch of soul. The fun starts at 7.

PRO TIP: Try the wings in this cozy venue with a kickin’ kitchen. Sports fans love this place for catching the big game, too.

Local trick-or-treating

Hit Broadway at the Beach at participating businesses on Oct. 31 (4:30-6:30). Also on Halloween, 5-7 p.m., visit shops and restaurants at Barefoot Landing for loot. From 4-7 p.m., Cooper House will host a trunk or treat with crafts music, photos, and more.

PRO TIP: Stop for dinner at local restaurants before or after these events. Socastee Station is a nice spot for a quick dinner near Cooper House. Ask about their Bog Balls!
