Strand Shines in Southern Living

Readers of Southern Living once again have picked Myrtle Beach among their favorites.

The Grand Strand landed spots in two categories from the magazine's Readers' Choice awards, for "Beach Town" and "Family Vacation."

Destin, Fla., also made both categories.

Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando topped the "family vacation" list, while Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Ala., rounded out the list of favorite beach towns.

Myrtle Beach and Destin have ruled the "Beach Town" category since the Readers' Choice awards started in 1995.

Readers named Charleston one of the best Southern Cities, along with Savannah and Atlanta, and also named it one of the best places in the South to shop.

Atlanta and Pigeon Forge, Tenn., were also among the readers' picks for shopping.

The magazine's editors tacked Charlotte, N.C., onto the shopping spots.

Readers passed over the plethora of seafood restaurants along the Grand Strand, going with Hyman's Seafood in Charleston, Capt. Anderson's Restaurant & Waterfront Market in Panama City Beach, Fla., and the Original Oyster House in Alabama.

Readers picked their faves in 14 categories, including best barbecue restaurant and scenic drive.

The awards are in the magazine's January issue.

Mayor's Cup to Promote Golf as an All-seasons Activity in Myrtle Beach

In an effort to promote Myrtle Beach golf as a year-round activity, the city is starting an annual Mayor's Cup tournament at the city-owned Whispering Pines Golf Course at 31st Avenue South and Kings Highway.
Alan Chasteen, head golf professional at Whispering Pines, confirmed the plans for the tournament on Monday, saying the inaugural event will be held in November and will be open to all golfers regardless of residency.
Mayor John Rhodes is scheduled to hold a press conference this morning at Whispering Pines to announce the tournament will be Nov. 10-12 for men players and Nov. 17-19 for women.
"We've been wanting to put the city championship back in play," Chasteen said. "We thought this would be a good way to let people know that Myrtle Beach is a good place to play golf in November. The weather is terrific and the golf course is in great shape."
The tournament will be 54 holes of straight stroke play, with the fields broken into flights after 36 holes.
Chasteen said the fields will be limited to 136 golfers. The cost is $135 per person and that includes three days of golf, lunch each day and a gift bag.
He said the winners will receive a gift certificate and a replica of the Mayor's Cup. The actual Mayor's Cup will be a perpetual trophy, with each year's winners inscribed on it. It will stay at Whispering Pines.

Vanna White visits North Myrtle Beach to ready for SC shoot

Wheel of Fortune star and North Myrtle Beach native Vanna White is presented with a Key to the City of North Myrtle Beach during a brief ceremony Tuesday afternoon. Mayor Marilyn Hatley makes the presentation, with members of North Myrtle Beach City Council in attendance.

The "Wheel of Fortune" letter-turner made the rounds Tuesday in her hometown of North Myrtle Beach.

Vanna White, who has been on the popular syndicated game show for 24 of its 25 years, made several stops in her native city to film segues between a show and commercial breaks.

The segments, filmed by show producer Sony Pictures Entertainment, will air this winter during episodes that will be filmed in January in Charleston, according to "Wheel of Fortune" officials.

After receiving a key to the city from North Myrtle Beach officials, White, 49, paid a visit to Original Painter's Homemade Ice Cream.

A half-hour before she arrived, 30 to 40 film crew members swarmed out of a bus and van and speedily set up the shoot for two bumpers.

The group flew down earlier in the day from New York, one aide said, and White took a jet from Los Angeles.

Ten classic cars lining the lot's front row, including a maroon 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air and yellow 1966 Ford Mustang, intrigued many of the crew members. Several of the nonprofit Myrtle Beach Car Club's 145 members parked their wheels as props, said Dick Axelrod of Myrtle Beach, who co-founded the club in 1983. He said show personnel contacted the club last week with a request for the cars.

White spent a few minutes each taping two segments, one in front of the store, another at the order window.

Asked afterward if she discovers anything new or special during each return home, White said she doesn't notice too much change.

"The same places I've been to I go back to," she said.
